Can Erie catch a break?

Seemingly everywhere we look, there's a new problem with a project that is supposed to bring good things to our community.

The Commonwealth delivers us a previously unknown entrepreneur from Florida who wants to build a juice plant and bring more than 300 jobs to the city. Unfortunately, his project has been marked by delays, indecision and, ultimately, controversy.

Plans to build a convention center on the bayfront -- an already controversial project -- is already over budget.

Now comes news that MTR Gaming -- the company that is building a massive new horse racing track and casino in Summit Township -- is balking at the amount of tax money it will have to fork over once it opens its legalized cash machine. This, of course, raises questions over whether the track will be as big a financial win as it was when it was first pitched.

This was supposed to be a time when the community was celebrating all of these projects and reaping the benefits of the newly created jobs and economic opportunities.

Instead, we are saddled with questions over whether our economy will ever gain traction.
