Shoo Fly? That bothers me

The state's Tourism Office today said it has chosen the slogan for the new official state bumper sticker.

And the winner is ...

... wait for it ...

"I break for Shoo Fly Pie"

Do you know what shoo fly pie is?

I bet 80 percent of you don't. After doing an informal poll among my colleagues here in the newsroom, I might even be underestimating that number.

If you must know, it's a molasses-based pie that's popular in Pennsylvania Dutch country, according to our friends at Wikipedia.

I'm sure it's delicious.

But I'm also sure that it doesn't have any relevance to most of us west of Harrisburg.

And I'm even more sure that the out-of-staters who would see this montstrosity of a slogan will have no idea what it means.

Heck, I might even have a higher "Q" rating than shoo fly pie -- at least among folks in this corner of the state.

I'm not in the tourism business, but I'm sure I could do better.

And I know that many of you could come up with something even more creative than my attempt.

"You've got a friend in Pennsylvania" is definitely starting to sound a lot better.

I'd love to hear what you think.

Post your comment on the new slogan -- and if you think you can do better, offer your suggestion.

Maybe we can get the folks at the Tourism Office to listen to this part of the state the next time they want to come up with a slogan.
