Yes, some do come home

We've given a lot of attention recently to the topic of brain drain -- and for good reason. Erie's population is dropping and there is a palpable perception among many participants in this blog that the region is lacking real opportunity.

But it is worth noting that "all" roads are not leading out of Erie, as a recent front page headline stated.

In fact, there are some people who are coming back home -- or even coming to Erie for the first time.

Reader Robert F. Luther, an Iroquois High graduate and a manager for the Talking Phone Book, wrote me recently to point to his own story.

Luther has moved from Erie three times during the past 30 years -- and he's returned home each time for what he says were better jobs than he had elsewhere.

"I'm very concerned about our area's ability to keep businesss in the Erie region as well as create better jobs for the younger workers and recent graduates," Luther writes. "But we need to try and balance the stories that are told."

His point is worth noting -- though I must admit there have been few people who have taken time to comment who have expressed that viewpoint.

So, I'm offering the venue. Have you come home to Erie and, if so, what can we learn from your story?

I'm living proof that Erie can attract young professionals from other cities. I grew up in Rochester and came here from a nice job in Boston.

If others are out there, I'd love to hear from you.
