An election year

You can tell an election is around the corner when the big cardboard checks begin popping up around town with greater frequency.

Today, you'll see Gov. Ed Rendell pass along at least five of those checks as part of a pre-November "vote for me" stop in Erie.

The biggest check will go to the Erie County Convention Center Authority, which will get $6.5 million to finish the construction of the new bayfront convention center and parking ramp, according to a report this morning by Kara Rhodes.

Another high-profile project -- the planned Gannon University technology incubator -- is getting $2.5 million, as is the proposed international trade center at Erie International Airport.

Money is also getting passed out this morning to Erie Shipbuilding LLC and the Erie Art Museum.
