Fast times on West 12th

Robin Scheppner, the president of American Tinning and Galvanizing, wrote to me this week to offer her thoughts on the newly synchronized lights on West 12th Street.

You might remember the stories from September about the effort to synchronize the lights -- a move that was designed to improve traffic flow and reduce the amount of stop-and-go-driving for motorists.

Scheppner has a front-row seat to the action on West 12th Street and offered this assessment:

"And they're off!

"Driving on west 12th Street is certainly a more pleasant experience thanks to the synchronized street lights. I arrive at work with much less frustration by not having to stop at every intersection for a red light.

"However, there is still an element of stress with the work day commute that is caused by racing vehicles. Now that the lights allow for an unimpeded trip, drivers are putting the pedal to the metal and speeding across town.

"The 40 mile speed limit is routinely ignored and exceeded. We might not have the irritation of stop and go driving but do have the angst and anxiety of having to deal with reckless, high speed racers darting in and out of traffic.

"Its downright dangerous!"

That's one person's opinion. What do you think? Post a comment here to share your thoughts.
