GAF and Erie's future

Today's Inside Erie e-mail newsletter talked about the loss of the GAF shingle factory and what it means to Erie's economic future.

Here's an excerpt:

"The answer isn’t manufacturing alone. Or tourism alone.

"Both have a place here. Manufacturing remains a big part of who we are. Tourism also makes sense, to a degree.

"But our economy is not going to grow to its potential without a strong third – or more accurately – fourth leg.

"We need to create an atmosphere here that attracts and nurtures companies like Erie Insurance and Logistics Plus that will provide a wave of new opportunities for workers who want to earn a comfortable living.

"Those opportunities are not likely to come through manufacturing alone. They are not likely to come through tourism alone.
It’s not an either-or proposition. We need both. But we also need more."
