Huckabee makes the A-list

A month ago, any mention of down-in-the polls Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee might have elicited this response: Hucka-who?

But Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor from Hope, Ark., (sound familiar?), is leading GOP polls in the leadoff Iowa caucus, Jan. 3. The Scripture-quoting ordained Baptist minister is apparently connecting in the Hawkeye State.

Huckabee made the cover of the current issue of Newsweek, putting his face on newsstands and in mailboxes across the nation.

It’s early and Huckabee hasn’t caught fire in New Hampshire, where the nation’s first primary is scheduled Jan. 8. Mitt Romney still leads there.

But Huckabee’s rise from single-digit polling numbers in Iowa shows that anything can happen in the presidential nominating races.
