Another Erie-Iowa connection

I reported in today’s Erie Times-News about Mercyhurst College graduate Maeve Kelly’s work in Iowa on behalf of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign.

As it turns out, another person with Erie-area ties is in Iowa, too.

Dan Riley, 23, the son of Fairview residents Patty and Tim Riley, is working in Des Moines for Democratic candidate John Edwards, his mother said.

I contacted Dan Riley but he declined comment, citing a policy that all questions must go through the campaign’s press office. That’s not unusual with presidential campaigns.

Unfortunately, the press office said that Riley would be too busy for comment with the Iowa caucuses tonight.

Patty Riley said that they haven’t been able to speak to their son too much either for the past month or so. Any phone conversations last about two minutes “when he’s in the car going from one place to another. That’s all he has time for,’’ she said.

Riley said her son is a 2002 graduate of Fairview High School and a 2006 graduate of Duke University, where he majored in political science.
