Where's the buzz?

Photographer Jack Hanrahan and I walked into a Westfield, N.Y., bar about noon the other day to see if anybody would be interested in talking about Tuesday’s New York primary.

The lone customer at the bar, drinking a beer, said, “I just don’t give a (bleep).’’

It’s a good thing we had much better luck at the Main Diner in Westfield, and Meeder’s Restaurant in Ripley.

But while no one else was quite as blunt as the guy in the bar, the buzz about Super Tuesday — at least in our travels — seemed subdued, with a couple of exceptions.

That’s hard to figure.

Michael Federici, a political science professor at Mercyhurst College, said there could be an expectation on the Democratic side that Hillary Rodham Clinton is going to win her home state handily. “That could dampen some of the interest in the race there,’’ he said.

Another factor could be at play, he said.

“I think we sometimes underestimate what Americans pay attention to. Far more Americans watch the Super Bowl than watch the presidential debates,’’ he said.

Sunday’s big game was the most-watched Super Bowl of all time, with 97.5 million viewers. It eclipsed the record set for the 1996 game between Dallas and Pittsburgh, when 94.1 million people tuned in.
