Bill George, a Pennsylvania superdelegate, is supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. George is president of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO and has been a member of the Democratic National Committee since 1996.
George is a superdelegate by virtue of his DNC membership, just as Erie lawyer Ian Murray is a DNC member and superdelegate. Murray is supporting Clinton, too.
George, whose office is in Harrisburg, said in a statement released by Clinton that she has "the strength and experience to jump-start the economy and rebuild the middle class.
"Working families in Pennsylvania overwhelmingly favored her in last week's primary, and I feel that she is our strongest candidate to carry Pennsylvania in November and win back the White House,'' George said.
Clinton is winning the majority of superdelegates in Pennsylvania, but nationwide, Sen. Barack Obama is closing the gap on her.
Obama has cut Clinton's lead among superdelegates in half in less than two months, the Associated Press reported. He now trails her by just 21 superdelegates, 243-264, the AP reported.
Since neither candidate will reach the required number of pledged delegates to win the nomination, the superdelegates are expected to decide the nomination. Obama is leading Clinton by more than 100 pledged delegates.
With the primary season coming to a close, the uncommitted superdelegates are starting to line up behind the candidates.
