Clinton to concede

Today will be Sen.Hillary Rodham Clinton's last hurrah in the presidential race.

The Associated Press is reporting that Clinton will concede tonight that Sen. Barack Obama has the delegates to gain the Democratic nomination.

Her speech tonight is scheduled for New York City, which gave a clue of her intentions because she'll be back in the state where she serves as U.S. senator.

She will stop short of formally ending or suspending her race, and will continue to speak out on health care and other issues, AP reported. But the campaign is basically over.

She could be seeking a second spot on the ticket.

If you thought it was interesting before, just wait.

Murray and other superdelegates

Almost every day, I get e-mails from the Obama and Clinton camps announcing which superdelegates are supporting the candidates.

As it became apparent that Sen. Barack Obama would clinch the nomination, more superdelegates came out in support of Obama.

One of the latest e-mails from the Obama campaign included a roundup of statements of support from more than 26 superdelegates across the nation. Included in that group was a statement from Erie lawyer Ian Murray, a Sen. Hillary Clinton supporter who is now backing Obama.

My story in today's Erie Times-News and on GoErie.com tells why Murray made the switch.

Students to participate in congressional debate

High school students will question Republican U.S. Rep. Phil English of Erie and the two challengers for his 3rd District seat at a debate in September.

English and his opponents, Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper of Erie and independent Steven Porter of Wattsburg, have agreed to debate at Corry Area High School Sept. 29 at 1 p.m., said James Wojcicehowski, adviser to the Corry High School History Club.

The candidates will face each other in the Nov. 4 general election.

Forty-five high schools in the 3rd District have been invited to participate in the debate. Fort LeBoeuf, McDowell, Mercyhurst, Sharpsville and Slippery Rock have signed up so far.

Consider these choices for VP

There's a lot of speculation these days about the vice presidential choices for both Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama.

Interestingly, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and current Gov. Ed Rendell are getting some face time on national TV on a variety of issues in the race.

Both have been mentioned as possible VP choices -- Ridge for McCain and Rendell for Obama.

They're both longshots for the job, and Rendell told me in a recent interview that he wants to finish out his term and then maybe serve -- if asked -- in a White House cabinet job.

Still, Ridge and Rendell as their parties' respective choices would be an interesting twist to this presidential race. And it certainly would put Pennsylvania in the thick of the action.

It will never happen, but it's fun to think about.

Gore backs Obama

Former Vice President Al Gore endorsed Sen. Barack Obama today, then appeared with him tonight during what the Associated Press described as a raucous rally at Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit.

Gore's speech was part endorsement, part blistering criticism of President George W. Bush's policies and actions, according to AP.

Gore went up against Bush in the 2000 presidential election -- the controversial one when the world heard about hanging and dimpled chads on punch-card ballots in Florida.

Charting Perot

Ross Perot is at it again.

Perot, who used economic charts during his 1992 and 1996 presidential campaigns, has started a Web site about the nation's economic troubles.

The Web site is called -- what else? -- PerotCharts.com.

The billionaire Perot, 77, started the Web site to highlight the "economic crisis'' facing the nation due to deficit spending, the Associated Press reported.

And yes, there are a whole series of charts on the site.

Perot was frequently parodied on Saturday Night Live in the '90s. Looks like SNL will have some new material on a familiar subject when the new season starts in the fall.

Obama and Clinton to campaign together

This message appeared in my e-mail today at work: Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will campaign together one week from today, on June 27.

More details will be announced soon, according to the news release from the Obama campaign.

Clinton endorsed Obama after suspending her own campaign, but we haven't seen them together yet as one team for an Obama presidency. It will be interesting to see where they campaign -- my guess is one of the battleground states.

Pennsylvania, maybe?

All together now

Sen. Barack Obama
and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton are about to take the stage to campaign together for the first time.

They're in Unity, N.H., where they both got exactly 107 votes in the nation's first primary in January.

This shouldn't be the first time that Clinton campaigns on behalf of Obama, now the Democratic nominee-in-waiting.

Political scientist Terry Madonna, of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, said that he would expect Clinton to campaign on Obama's behalf in Pennsylvania, where she carried the Democratic primary by 9 percentage points.

Double teaming

Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton have made their first joint campaign appearance, in Unity, N.H. They seemed to say all the right things to work as a team, and their body language suggested they were working off the same playbook, too.

We'll see how it all plays out during the rest of the campaign.

What are your thoughts about former rivals Clinton and Obama now working together? Send a comment.
