McCain used the Evolution Locomotive to launch into a discussion of his energy policy, calling for wind and solar energy, but also clean coal and nuclear power.
"The fact is that nuclear power is safe, and the fact is that it has zero greenhouse emissions," McCain said.
He then went on to support clean coal technology, saying that he is sick of people saying that we "can't" perfect clean coal technology or process nuclear waste.
Nuclear and clean coal both factor into McCain's energy policy, which his campaign calls
"The Lexington Project: An all of the above energy solution."
The plan includes:
- Increasing domestic oil and natural gas production and exploration.
- Reforming the transportation sector.
- Investing in alternative sources of energy, such as wind power.
- Taking steps to fight global climate change - also called global warming.
- Addressing oil speculators.
- Promoting energy efficiency in government buildings and upgrading the electric grid.
The part of the policy that may have gotten the most press coverage was McCain's plan to offer $300 million prize for the creation of a commercially viable electric car, and offering tax incentives to people buying currently available electric cars.
