Gospel music rarely takes an extended stroll in the Grammy spotlight. With Aretha Franklin in fine voice -- if not making a wise fashion choice with the lemony balloon she wore -- the Staples Center took time out for church.
Seemed like a choir of thousands on stage, with the Clark Sisters especially erupting full force. They won the Grammy for best traditional gospel album, "Live -- One Last Time." And, in a rare tie, Clark Sisters tied Aretha Franklin & Mary J. Blige for Best Gospel Performance.
That awkard Kid Rock & Keely Smith duet I could have done without...the Doctor felt sorry for her. Seemed like they met for the first time at the podium. They gave out best rock album award to the Foo Fighters, whose win seemed pre-ordained thanks to a nomination in the bigger album of the year category.
Feist sang "1, 2, 3, 4" -- maybe because she had 1, 2, 3, 4 Grammy nominations. But we're all overdosed on that track from the iPod Nano commercial. Wish she had sung "My Moon My Man," instead.
Always nice to see Stevie Wonder, who saluted Berry Gordy and introduced Alicia Keys' "No One." She picked up deserved awards for best R&B song and best female R&B vocal performance. Look out for her album at next year's ceremonies. "No One" came out in time for this year's awards but not her album, "As I Am.".
Vince Gill was funny -- "I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?" Kanye took it well. As is the usual case, Gill's win seemed a no-brainer. How could you be up for best album of the year but not win your own category? But Gill did turn out a brave effort -- a four-CD collection. That kind of ambition usually nets awards.
