Name: Mike Deutsch
City: Erie
Occupation: Sales merchandiser
Favorite team: Milwaukee Brewers
Favorite baseball player: Sandy Koufax
Most memorable fantasy baseball moment: When I won my Sandbox league and still didn't get my free T-shirt
Team motto: Draft up the middle early
Best late-round pick you ever made: Nate McLouth (hopefully)
League titles won: 7
Favorite fantasy baseball player: Mike Piazza (in his good years)
Outlook for the Times-News Challenge league: There's five solid teams in the league, and if I remain injury-free the rest of the year I will be competitive!
It's been a long time since they had a winning season. Check this video out and see what's happened since.
Name: Ron Kilburn
City: Meadville
Occupation: Technology sales.
Favorite team: Pirates - not sure why.
Favorite baseball player: Pete Rose.
Most memorable fantasy baseball moment: Losing league title on the last Sunday night game of the season when my starting pitcher had a bad outing.
Team motto: Balance is the key.
Worst trade you ever made: Getting rid of Ryan Braun early last season.
Best late-round pick you ever made: Eric Gagne his breakout year.
League titles won: A couple (not sure).
Favorite fantasy baseball player: None.
Outlook for the Times-News Challenge league: Need to stay/get healthy and a bit of luck or could be a long season.
Name: Shane Elzer
City: Erie, by way of Washington, Pa.
Occupation: Expeditor at GE Transportation
Favorite team: Boston Red Sox
Favorite baseball player: Ken Griffey Jr.
Most memorable fantasy baseball moment: In a five-by-five, head-to-head Yahoo league, I was in second place heading into the last week of the season, trailing the first-place team, who was my opponent in that final week, by six games. On the final Sunday of the season, I was trailing 8-2 only to come back and win by that same score, ultimately winning the regular season title by way of a tiebreaker.
Team motto: “The season is a marathon and not a sprint. But either way, it’s 90 feet to first.”
Worst trade you ever made: None come to mind, although I was on the better end of a Damien Easley for Pedro Martinez trade years back.
Best late-round pick you ever made: Ervin Santana - last round, this league, this year.
League titles won: 4
Favorite fantasy baseball player: Albert Pujols
Outlook for the Times-News Challenge league: As presumably the youngest (24) member of the league, I plan on capturing the league title away from Rob Seib with my youthful savvy and charisma. If I don’t, I’ll have to face the embarrassment, shame, and ridicule that my family and friends, who so dilligently follow these standings every Sunday, will surely shower me with.
The Dodgers pulled uber-prospect Clayton Kershaw after one inning of his minor league start Thursday, suggesting he could be headed to the majors. If you still have plans for your No. 1 spot on the waiver wire, I'd highly consider using it on him.
Name: Stan Zelepsky
City: Erie
Occupation: Engineer
Favorite team: The Sundogs (my fantasy team)
Favorite baseball player: Roberto Clemente
Most memorable fantasy baseball moment: One week waiver-wire pickup of Tino Martinez (Yankees) a couple years back. He hit seven to eight home runs in a week and I traded him before the end of the week. He didn’t hit another home run for two months.
Team motto: Put the best players out every day/week.
Worst trade you ever made: Can’t remember the specifics but it was undoubtedly with Rob Seib.
Best late-round pick you ever made: Truly don’t remember one. I have enough trouble with early and mid-round picks working out.
League titles won: Less than 10, Erie Times News once!
Favorite fantasy baseball player: Johan Santana.
Outlook for the Times-News Challenge league: Got everybody right where I want ’em. Traditionally, not a front-runner, I prefer to stalk the pace and close with a rush!
Get your rosters ready. The L.A. Times is reporting top pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw is scheduled to start Sunday at home against the Cardinals.
