Improving my team

What's wrong with my team?

I keep asking myself that nearly every day. Here it is, the beginning of June, one-third of the way into the season. By now, we should have a good idea of what our teams are, and aren't.

First, here's the bad news, the standings:

1. Ron Kilburn, Meadville 79.5
2. Rob Seib, Titusville, PA 75
3. Mike Deutsch, Erie 67.5
4. Kevin Barwin, Erie 64.5
5. Stan Zelepsky Erie 62
6. Shane Elzer, Lawrence Park 49.5
7. Rick Green, Times-News 49
8. C.J. Kanash, Millcreek 37.5
9. Jeff Colucci, Lake City 34.5
10. Robert Nuhfer, Erie 31

My lineup: Catchers: Ronny Paulino and Chris Snyder. 1B: Ryan Howard, 2B: Aaron Hill, 3B: Miggy Cabrera, SS: Derek Jeter, MI: Ty Wiggington, CI: Alex Gordon, OF: Carlos Lee, Chris Young, Hunter Pence, Pat Burrell, Justin Upton. UT: Mike Cameron. Pitchers: King Felix, Roy Halladay, Tim Lincecum, Edison Volquez, Johnny Cueto, Clayton Kershaw, Kevin Gregg, George Sherrill and Brian Fuentes. Bench: Brett Myers and Michael Bourn.

Miggy was my first-round pick, and I followed that up with Ryan Howard. Clearly, I need better production from my top two picks. If I was smart, I would have taken Albert Pujols and Ryan Braun, but that's just hindsight. And, for the record, Brett Myers was a wasted pick in the 10th round.

In general, my team is lousy in WHIP, last in Avg., next-to-last in SBs, and not much better in runs and RBIs. Nearly every offensive player has struggled to date.

I have to cut the dead weight at catcher. Neither player has produced and I'm looking to catch lightning in a bottle. So Jesus Flores of the Nationals and Miguel Olivo of the Royals are now on my team.

At second base, Aaron Hill has worn out his welcome. In goes Alexi Casilla of the Twins.

To address my lack of runs and SBs, Michael Bourn, he of the .200 average, goes in at UT for Cameron.

So, that's the easy stuff. Now I need to make some trades. I've gotten some offers, but haven't been able to pull the trigger on anything. We'll see what's out there this week.

In the meantime, I ask you, what's wrong with my team? What should I do?

More minor adjustments

My team continues to shed points like contestants on "The Biggest Loser." So, more moves are in store. Kaz Matsui was available on the free-agent wire, so in he goes at second base for Alexi Casilla. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been hot, so I'm trying him at catcher for Jesus Flores. Also, I'm dropping Mike Cameron from my bench and picking up Rick Ankiel to hopefully get a little power.

Season-ending surgery for Smoltz

That opens up the closer's role in Atlanta. Rafael Soriano would be the guy to pick up. But also keep an eye on Mike Gonzalez.

Climbing the ladder?

Well, after two weeks, I moved up a spot in the standings. At that pace, first place should be in hand by August.

But it won't be easy. So the moves will keep coming.

I pulled the trigger on a deal last week with Shane Elzer. It was a quick deal, no haggling.

Shane offered Yunel Escobar, Kosuke Fukudome and Matt Cain for Hunter Pence and Rafael Furcal.

I have Furcal in another league and he has been driving me crazy. I'm a big Hunter Pence fan, but to get Escobar and Fukudome, I had to shake things up. Getting Escobar allowed me to cut Ty Wiggington, who was a DL replacement for Furcal. Getting Cain allowed me to cut Johnny Cueto, who twice now has been cut in the league. You wouldn't have guessed that would have happened back in April.

Now we'll have to see if any of these moves help or hurt.

As for the league, the first official trade to go through took place last week.

Robert Nuhfer traded Matt Holliday to Shane for Ervin Santana.

I think Shane got the better player in the deal.

The Chase is on

Padres outfielder Chase Headley is expected to be called up this week. He could be in the uniform for the Indians game on Sunday.

If you're waiting for the next big thing, he'd be worth using a waiver spot on.

Fantasy Challenge standings

Standings through Thursday:

1. Ron Kilburn, Meadville 86
2. Rob Seib, Titusville 68.5
3. Mike Deutsch, Erie 66.5
4. Stan Zelepsky, Erie 66
5. Rick Green, Times-News 56.5
6. Shane Elzer, Lawrence Park 49.5
7. Kevin Barwin, Erie 49
8. C.J. Kanash, Millcreek 47.5
9. Jeff Colucci, Lake City 33
10. Robert Nuhfer, Erie 27.5

Another trade made

The third trade in the Fantasy Challenge has taken place. Surprisingly, I was involved.

Stan Zelepsky posted on our league's Web site he had White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin available for a trade. He wanted a shortstop in return.

No problem. I have Yankees superstar Derek Jeter and needed some offense, and Quentin fit the bill for me (.271-17-56).

An offer went out. Quentin and Justin Upton for Jeter and Carlos Gomez, who was on Stan's bench and I could use some steals.

I could have talked up Upton, being a young guy who could start to hit again soon, but Stan knows his stuff. Stan wasn't interested in Upton, so instead of going back and forth to try to get Gomez, I opted to get Quentin and be happy.

Quick deal. Now I just need Quentin to still produce.

Oh, and I'm up to fifth in the standings.

Half-way there

My slow climb up the ladder ran into some trouble Friday night. My team dropped into a tie for seventh place after being in fifth place.

So, what's the trouble? Average (last), stolen bases (next-to-last) and runs (eighth place).

The season has taken weird turns, to be sure. For example, I'm fourth in home runs, but eighth in RBIs (thanks, Chris Young). I'm also fourth in ERA, but eighth in WHIP.

Hopefully, there will balancing.

In the meantime, I decided to make another trade.

I sent Carlos Lee packing. He ended up on Ron Kilburn's team (first place). I'm sure Lee will like being on a first-place team and start producing immediately.

I did get in return Evan Longoria and Torri Hunter.

We'll see if it works out.

June 29, 2008

Fixing my pitching

Brett Myers has been crushing my ERA/WHIP all season.

I figure he's had plenty of chances to show he can salvage his season. He'll get some more too, but just not on my team right now.

I gave Myers the pink slip today and picked up former Erie SeaWolves pitcher Jair Jurrjens.

Myers' totals so far: 3 wins, a 5.84 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. He is owned in about half of all ESPN leagues.

So, it probably a case of what took me so long. I hate giving up too soon on someone. In this case, it might have been giving him too many chances.
