History of the company

The flat-screen television in the media room here is cycling through a slideshow of charts and graphs of the company's 2007 profits, where it stands among the most profitable companies and other financial date.

Mixed in with that, though, is an occasional reference to great moments in the company's past.

According to the GE Web site, the company was originally founded by Thomas Edison – you might remember him from developing the incandescent light bulb – when he founded the Edison Electric Light Company in 1878.

In 1892 the company merged with another electric company to form General Electric.
