Erie BayHawks coach John Treloar is still looking to add a player after waiving former Pitt guard Mike Cook earlier this month.
What I can tell you right now is that 1, the player is a perimeter player. Two, when I asked Treloar why he cut Cook, he said it was to upgrade his roster.
Cook said it was because Treloar told him Cook didn't think he was playing the amount of minutes he deserved.
Now back to the this secret addition, who third, is not a former NBA player according to Treloar.
So look for something to happen in the next couple of days. When you look at the moves Treloar has made so far, they've been somewhat puzzling.
First he waived forward Taj McCullough for Cook. McCullough brought versatility and someone who can score. He's averaging 16 points for Fort Wayne and has started all 12 games he's played for the Mad Ants.
Cook had some same attributes, but McCullough is three inches taller than the 6-foot 4-inch Cook.
When Treloar cut McCullough, it was because the BayHawks were in need more veterans and McCullough, according to Treloar, wasn't up to playing power forward. The BayHawks came into the season with five players who had just finished college the previous year.
But he brought in Cook, who had just finished college the season before as well. Then he waived Geary Claxton and brought in another player who finished college last season in center Darian Townes. Now Townes did spend some time overseas, but he's a young player.
The BayHawks did need size so 6-foot 10-inch Townes makes some sense, but he's got to give them more to make the move seem worthwhile.
Now whoever the BayHawks add should have at least two of the following three things if he is indeed a perimeter player. Can shoot. Create a shot for himself. Has size and length.
If he had all three things, then that's someone who could come in and start from the jump. Cook had those skills, but because he's not fully recovered from the knee injury in terms of ho he plays the game, he couldn't ever really show it to the full extent.
Now since the BayHawks are on the road, when and where the new addition takes a physical will be a challenge so he may not play until Erie returns home to play Idaho next week.
