Lessons in Leadership

I've been invited to be a presenter at a student leadership development conference at Edinboro University in late April. The conference is entitled: "Your Passport to Leadership: Women Reflect on Careers and Compensation." They asked me to fill out a form listing my best leadership advice.

I listed three things that I've learned (usually the hard way):
1. Pick your battles wisely -- don't waste energy complaining about or trying to fix things that can't be changed.
2. Taking time to show people HOW to do things is a solid investment. It takes some time, but it pays off in the end.
3. You don't have to act like a man to be a leader. Being nice -- but not too nice -- opens many doors as people who like you want to help you.

Yesterday, there was a really great article on the front of the Erie Times-News' business section (You, Inc.) from www.marketwatch.com that outlined 12 steps to workplace success.

I could've written myself. It's really solid advice that has worked for me. You can read it here.
