I tried it Tuesday: Calamari's Nut & Berry Salad

Tuesdays are "I Tried It Tuesdays" where I'll tell you about something I recently tried -- an item, a movie, an activity, etc.

OK..OK...so it's Wednesday. I didn't have time to blog yesterday because I was putting together a monster of a Nurse's Week special section. I did, however, make time to have lunch with one of my Her Times freelancers which just so happens to have given me a great "I tried it" topic.

Today's topic: Nut & Berry Salad at Calamari's Squid Row in downtown Erie.

It pays to read the list of specials that the waitresses at Calamari's hand you when you go in to eat because that's where you'll find the Nut & Berry Salad. A yummy green salad with almond slices, dried cranberries, feta cheese, etc., etc. .... oh, trust me...it is just delish.

Did I like it? Oh...definitely. I waffled long & hard about ordering the Nut & Berry Salad yesterday because I love their "Big Slim" veggie wrap sandwich, but I decided to break out of my Calamari's rut and order the salad. I'm glad I did.

Cost: $7.25 -- well worth it.

Cutting calories? Ask them to go easy on the cheese and order a fat-free or low-fat dressing or a balsamic vinagrette -- dressings always come on the side.

Want to try the Nut & Berry salad?
Call Calamari's -- 459-4276 -- to see if it's on the menu that day. Our waitress told us that they were going to be making this a regular menu item. So, soon, you'll be able to get it any day.

Dine outdoors: In summer, there are no better tables at Calamari's than those on the outdoor patio. Beat the lunchtime crowd (we get there about 11:45 a.m.) and you can have your pick of tables.

Also try: Another salad I'd recommend at Calamari's is the Buffalo Chicken salad. It's not exactly low-fat since it includes cheese and deep fried boneless chicken wing pieces, but it is yummy. Fair warning -- it's hot...really hot. You will break out in a sweat eating this sucker. But, it's all worth it.
