Three things - 4/10/08

Three things I'm loving this week:

1. Braeburn apples. If you only eat red delicious apples, you have no idea what you're missing. A few years ago I kept getting lousy, mushy red delicious apples. I decided to try some other varieties and now I can never go back to red delicious. I like a good, hard, crunchy, sweet apple. Here are a few that I love: Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady and Cameo.

2. My neighbors. All winter long, we stayed holed up in our own houses, but the recent warm spell brought everyone outdoors again. I've enjoyed catching up with everyone as they (or we) bike, run or walk by.

3. Sleeping single in a double bed. With apologies to Ms. Barbara Mandrel (she was my mom's favorite singer!)...there is true joy in being the only body occupying a nice, big, warm double bed. It's the best thing about fishing camp, turkey camp, deer camp and any other animal-killing event that requires a guy's weekend at camp.

Three things I'm NOT loving this week:

1. Barberry bushes. These are pretty, compact bushes, but they are evil if you touch them. I've been picking teeny, tiny thorns out of my hands and forearms ever since doing a spring garden clean-up this weekend. And I was wearing heavy-duty gardening gloves and a long-sleeve sweatshirt! I'd rip the bushes right out of my beds, but...it would likely result in an embarrassing E.R. visit.

2. Hi-beams. I understand...it's 5:30 a.m. and you're trying to figure out what is running down the road...go ahead, flick on your hi-beams to get a good look at me. Then, for the love of GOD, click them back down. Please. I cannot see. So...it's good you can, cause you can swerve when I stumble and fall into your path.

3. Fruity Pebbles. Ever try to scrub the rainbow-colored food remnants out of your kid's teeth? I caved and let them have sugar-in-a-box for breakfast, but...never again.
