It appears this is an attempt at cybermarketing (is that a word?) to build buzz for a book online through personal blogs, i.e.they're giving you a free book in hopes you'll blog about it and tell all your friends.

I signed up...even though the last thing I need is more spam, junk mail ...not to mention more books in my "to read someday" pile (so you don't have to worry about me blogging endlessly about books...I have no time to read these days...but someday....)
