Tuesdays are "I Tried It Tuesdays" where I'll tell you about something I recently tried -- an item, a movie, an activity, etc.
Today's topic: Listerine
What it is: An antiseptic mouthwash
Why I tried it: Despite brushing several times a day and flossing regularly (no, really....I have it everywhere..in my car, in my desk, in every bathroom at home...I eat a lot of spinach!), I am cavity-prone. After one particularly horrible cleaning a couple of years ago at which my dentist found FOUR cavities, I was really bummed out. Dr. B said..."well, some people just have this special kind of bacteria that causes cavities....you should thank your lucky stars you don't have the kind of bacteria that causes bad breath -- that's really horrible for people...at least I can fix your cavities." I was mildly consoled, but still mortified. Sitting at the first appt. to have my cavities repaired, I was whining to the hygienist when she recommended I try Listerine. She said she swears by it. And...at that point, I was ready to try anything.
How it works: You take a big mouthful and swish it around in your mouth for a minute. Not as easy as it sound because...uh...it burns...bad. But..it's good...cause it's burning all those disgusting germs and...it's better than novacaine shots in the gums!
How often do you use it: I use it twice a day -- morning and night. And, sometimes after I brush my teeth at other times, too. It won't hurt you to use it a few times a day if you want.
Does it work: It did for me. I've only had one cavity since I started using it (knock on wood). And, I was coming off a string of lots and lots of cavities -- never did a cleaning go by without a follow-up to fill the holes.
How much does it cost: Less than $5 for a big bottle that lasts about a month. I actually use the store brand because it's much cheaper than Listerine.
What it's not: It is not a cavity protection or prevention like Act, but it kills the bacteria in your mouth that causes cavities.
Just too strong for you (can't keep it in your mouth)? Here's a tip -- dilute it with a little water. Diluted is better than nothing.
