Teach me to dismiss a 5-year-old

My Aunt gave my daughter, Lauren, 5, a mesh butterfly case — they kind they sell in kits for people to hatch their own butterflies. Lauren has been carrying it around for weeks, collecting insects in it. I let them go when she goes to bed.

The other day she came downstairs carrying her case babbling about a chrysalis. I looked inside and, sure enough, there was a black chrysalis hanging on a stick nestled in a bunch of ragweed she'd stuck in the case. She had, apparently, found the chrysalis while on a walk in the woods.

She told me she was sure it was going to be a Monarch. I said, "Uh...yeah, maybe, honey," but I was thinking..."yeah, right...it's probably a moth."

My husband called me at work at the end of the day and said, "It was a Monarch....it hatched."

Teach me for dismissing a 5-year-old entomologist-wannabe.

We let it go in the backyard and it hung around a minute or so then flew off into the apple tree. It's probably half way to Mexico by now.

MAYBE... JUST MAYBE she has found her niche early in life... Think about it... Child prodigy entomologist! WORLDS YOUNGEST biology professor! Imagine the possibilities! "13 year old Cass daughter finds cure for (insert disease here) in the wilderness!" Yes my friend, you could have a kid genius on your hands!!!
