Tuesdays are "I Tried It Tuesdays" where I'll tell you about something I recently tried -- an item, a movie, an activity, etc.
Today's topic: "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office: 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make that Sabotage Their Careers" by Lois P. Frankel, Ph.D.

What it is: A book -- specifically, a #1 Best-selling career guide for women
What it promises: "If you recognize and change the behaviors that say 'girl,' not 'woman,' the results pay off in career opportunities you never thought possible — and an image that identifies you as someone with the power and know-how to occupy the corner office."
Why I like it: It's an honest book that rings true and gives really solid career advice. These are mistakes I see other women make a lot. Some of these mistakes I have avoided instinctually (for instance, if you're late to a meeting, don't expect me to hop up and help you find a chair) And, there are more than a few of the mistakes that I recognize as things I do or have done.
Why I like it II: It's a quick and easy -- almost scan-able -- read. First, the author explains the mistake in a concise/quick manner, then she gives you actionable coaching tips to help you stop making that mistake.
Who it's good for: Pretty much any working woman.
Is it new? No, it was first published in 2004. I just discovered it, however, when I quoted some material in the book in a story in the last issue of Her times.
How much? Less than $20 for the hardcover version. Paperback may even be available by now.
Some of the mistakes she addresses:
#1 -- Pretending it isn't a game
#5 -- Working without a break
#8 -- Waiting to be given what you want
#11 -- Protecting jerks
#15 -- Polling before making a decision
#26 -- Decorating your office like your living room
#38 -- Putting work ahead of personal life
#46 -- Minimizing your work or position
#52 -- Giving away your ideas
#62 -- Using Qualifers
#64 -- Talking too fast
#74 -- Taking up too little space
#86 -- Failing to maintain eye contact
#94 -- Denying your power
Would I recommend it: Highly. Every woman should read this, but...I will say that it's a lot to absorb and try to remember. My suggestion is to pick one or two things to work on at one time.
