Lessons in snowbelt living

It occurred to me today, as I was inching down the road this a.m. to drop the kids off at my parent's house (school snow day), that I'd never talked to the kids about what to do in a car accident (particularly one in the winter).

My oldest daughter said something about hoping we don't go in a ditch (yeah, me, too, baby) and I thought...gosh...what if I did? And, I was unconscious?

So, I told them that if that should ever happen -- that we get in an accident and I'm not awake -- they should always stay in the car. I explained that they'd get lost in the storm, but the police would be able to find the car, so they should always stay in the car. I pointed out the extra blankets and clothes in the back of the car and even let them in on my secret granola bar stash in the console (which I'm sure I'll have to replenish now that they know it's there).

Then, I reminded them that I have a cell phone & they can call 911. To which my eldest replied..."we don't know how to use your phone."

Valid point.

So, tonight...there will be cell phone lessons for the little snowbelt dwellers.
