I tried it Tuesday: Cornflake wreaths & Cheerio trees

Tuesdays are "I Tried It Tuesdays" where I'll tell you about something I recently tried -- an item, a movie, an activity, etc.

Today's topic: Cornflake wreaths & Cheerio trees

The background: I was the mom in charge of the snack at Kelly's "winter celebration" party last year and...I flopped (um...kids don't like veggie pizza...even if it IS in the shape of a Christmas tree). This year, I decided to dance around the school's "healthy snack" policy and give the kids something they might actually eat. And, I figured...hey it's cereal...whole grains are healthy (not so much when they're covered in butter, marshmallows and candy sprinkles, but...).

The recipe(s): The recipe is basically the same for both of these....the only thing that really changes is cereal (cornflakes for the wreaths and Cheerios for the trees...although...hey...the trees may look great with cornflakes now that I think about it).

WREATH COOKIES

1 stick butter
30 large marshmallows
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoon green food coloring
5 cups cornflakes
Cinnamon button candies

In a saucepan melt butter and marshmallows, stirring frequently. Add vanilla and food coloring. Pour mixture over cornflakes and stir well. Drop by spoonful onto waxed paper. Spray your hands with non-stick cooking spray and poke a hole in the middle with your finger. While cookie wreaths are hot, decorate with cinnamon button candies.

Advice for the cook: Two things -- 1.) The stuff is HOT to handle, so be careful; 2.) You need frequent re-greasing (spraying) of your hands to keep the mixture from sticking to your fingers.

What they taste like: Rice Krispie treats.

For the trees: Use honey-nut Cheerios instead of cornflakes. Use your hands to shape it into a tree. Sprinkle with candies to look like lights.
