Poking at the million-dollar question

I try to make it a point to ask my daughters about their school day. I ask what they did. Who they played with. They don't usually give up much information, but sometimes I get glimpses of their little lives.

It was during one of these conversations that my Kindergarten-age daughter Lauren started naming all the people in her class who were her friends. She omitted a boy that goes to our church, so I asked.

"What about Aaron...isn't he your friend?"

"Well...Aaron doesn't like me."

"Why do you think he doesn't like you?"

"He pokes me all the time. Poke. Poke. Poke."

I laughed out loud and said, "Honey, trust me, he likes you...that's how boys get you to pay attention to them." "They poke you and pull your pigtails and push you down on the playground...all so that you will notice them."

"Hmpf," she said. "That's dumb. Why he doesn't just talk to me?"

Ah...now, that's the million-dollar question most women would love the answer to.
