As the news keeps changing, so does your newspaper

Two Erie Times-News readers called this morning to ask why the front page of their newspaper is different from the ones their relatives across town received. The answer is the news is updated as it changes. The Times-News on Monday through Saturday has at least two editions, and the Sunday paper has even more.

The paper that landed on my doorstep this morning carried the banner headline: 'McCain clinches GOP nomination.' A smaller headline said Hillary Clinton won Ohio, but the Texas primary was too close to call. Upon my arrival in the newsroom at 8 a.m., I grabbed a final edition, which featured the bold headline: 'Clinton comeback.' In smaller type, I saw that she 'took Ohio, Texas and Rhode Island, while Obama won in Vermont.' The 'McCain clinches GOP nomination' was still on page one, but the headline had been reduced in size.

It's an example of the changing news that's constantly updated and delivered to readers -- not only in the newspaper, but also online. It's nothing for Cody Switzer, the Times-News online reporter, to update news four and five times each morning.

The coming weeks should be an exciting time throughout Pennsylvania, now that Clinton's comeback has shifted the spotlight to the Keystone State. From now through the April 22 primary, Clinton and Barack Obama are expected to criss-cross the state numerous times.

Veteran Times-News reporter John Guerriero, whose daily political blog on GoErie.com has been a lively and popular addition to online features, plans to update the blog throughout the day. Stay tuned, because these next few weeks could be the most exciting on the political scene in years.
