Times-News won't divulge names of children charged in assault

The front page story in today's Erie Times-News about 10-year-old Rikki Triana, who was brutally attacked in the playground at Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary School, did not list the names of the two children who are charged with the crime.

Triana, who said she was pulled from the monkey bars Thursday and severely beaten, remains hospitalized at Hamot Medical Center. Surgeons put three pins in his right hip in the hope they could hold the hip together. But doctors said she will need more surgery and could require hip replacement surgery.

Erie police Lt.Dan Spizarny said he could not remember a case in which "kids this young did so much damage." Police accused two girls, 10 and 11, in the vicious attack. Times-News reporter Kara Rhodes said the girls have been charged with grown-up crimes -- aggravated assault, simple assault and conspiracy. They face prosecution in juvenile court.

And, because the girls are juveniles, the Times-News will not list their names. Write to me and let me know how you feel about the policy and its application in this case.
