"Early" has left my vocabulary

Today I thought about getting to work a little earlier. I have a lot on my agenda and a few extra minutes before people start to arrive in the office would have been nice.

But we've had a busy week that started with a somewhat sick child on Monday, moved on to an extra long swim lesson for me on Tuesday and continued with a visit with out-of-town friends on Wednesday. Not to mention that last weekend was go-go-go with a niece's graduation party, the family reunion and the Scandinavian festival in Jamestown, N.Y.

So, I'm tired. And I can't climb out of bed a half hour early, no matter how good my intentions are. I fall asleep on the couch at night, only to get up, brush my teeth and move to my bedroom.

To top it all off, as I'm trying to get in the car in the morning, Autumn takes her time on each step, pointing to the windows outside, pointing to Keith's game controllers, playing with the keys in her hand. Sometimes she even stops and sits. I'm trying real hard to let her go at her own pace, but at the same time, I really, really want her to just get down the steps so we can get in the car and be on our way. Even if I can't be early anymore, I'd at least like to make it on time.

Of course, if you go back to my high school band days, you'd see a quote on the wall of the band room saying, "To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late."

With that thinking, things don't look good for me...
