Remember how I mentioned talking to a lawyer about a will? Well, I've now taken another step in vacation preparedness: a temporary power of attorney.
I was talking to a family friend about our upcoming vacation and she said when she used to go and leave her boys, she'd get a power of attorney and have it notarized so that way if anything happened while she was gone, the people caring for her sons could sign for their medical care, etc., if needed. She figured if she took that step, nothing would happen. If she wasn’t prepared, that’s when something would happen.
So, I did some looking around and found that a great form for Oregon. Click here to see it. So I copied that and changed the Oregon wording and made it fit my needs. I also found out that Sue’s Notary Service in Erie is open till 8 p.m. on weeknights. And it only costs $7 to get something like this notarized. If you don’t have a form ready to go, they have ones you can fill out on the spot. You don’t need to make an appointment there, either, because they only accept walk-ins. It’s all perfect, actually.
When we go on vacation, my parents will receive the power of attorney and Autumn’s insurance card. I guess it’s just one more step toward peace of mind.
Now if we could only do something about these terrorist plots.
