Hairy adventures

First off -- I apologize to any of you who tried to read the blogs and couldn't over the past few days. Apparently, there was some problem that was out of our hands and wasn't even related to the blogs, but was on the same server that hosts the blogs. It's all so far away from me, but oh so frustrating at the same time. Hopefully, things will stay working now.

So now you'll hear about something else that's frustrating, but in a much smaller and much more amusing way.

Autumn was born with short, dark hair. Of course, nobody ever saw it because we kept it under a little cap for the first few months of her life. During this time, her little newborn hair fell out (as I heard it might) and she ended up with a little ring of hair around the lower half of her head, much like that of a balding man. Eventually, her hair started to grow in a bit so by the time she had her first birthday, she did have short hair once again.

Lately, her hair has been growing. At first, after the time with short hair, that ring around her head started to grow more. She had these two little tails hanging down on either side of her head, with everything else growing slower. My husband started to fear she would have a mullet. Yet, I made him hold out on the hair cutting. So far, we've been OK, but have come dangerously close to the mullet.

Right now, she's still got short hair where her bangs would be, but now has little curls in the back of her head that touch her shoulders. Last night I checked and I think we do have enough hair for some sort of pigtails, even if she may look a bit like Cindy Lou Who when we're done.

Here comes the frustrating part:
1. Last night I couldn't find the little, itty-bitty pigtail/ponytail holders I picked up for her, so I couldn't try them in her hair.
2. Even when I do have the equipment, such as a hair brush or the little barrettes I bought to hold some of her hair out of her face, she doesn't want to sit still.

I can't blame her. As a little girl I hated to have my hair washed, let alone brushed. We girls get tangles in our hair and that can hurt. I still have trust issues when it comes to anyone putting hot rollers or a curling iron in my hair -- those things can burn a scalp or forehead if the person wielding them is not careful. So I sympathize with her -- I really do.

But I'm still going to chase after her with a brush and some sort of hair decor. I can just see it if we went out in public, her with a bad case of bed head. Those quick glimpses at her with people thinking, "Doesn't that child's mother brush her hair? The poor thing." Instead, I'm going to let them stare at me, the mother who was so exhausted trying to do her daughter's do that she forgot to brush her own hair.
