The news gets more disturbing every day

Yesterday evening I picked up my newspaper (it was a busy day and that was the first time I had a chance to read the news) and immediately I found something I'd like to discuss in this blog. But then I flipped the paper and saw the top headline. So now the happier story has to wait until tomorrow.

Guess what the top story was... "Baby used in beating."

What is wrong with this world? If you missed the story, read here to see today's story, which has even more details about the evening where a mother allegedly hit her boyfriend, the baby's father, with her 4-week-old son. According to reports, she picked the baby up by his legs and swung him at the boyfriend/baby's father.

Now the baby is in a medically-induced coma at a Pittsburgh hospital. His skull is fractured and there's bleeding in his brain, his condition is critical.

I don't care how much this woman had to drink or how angry she was at her boyfriend. I don't care how many neighbors say she's a good mother. There's no excuse, ever, for using a baby as a "weapon."

Just think about that baby. At 4 weeks old, he has no control over his body. He doesn't have any strength to hold his head up. His fontanels are nowhere near closed, nowhere near protecting his little brain. And then he's picked up by his legs and swung at an adult man who has to weigh more than 10 times his weight.

This story should be so absurd it's laughable. It shouldn't be real. But, instead, it's nauseating to read of it, knowing it actually happened to a helpless infant. And not only happened to him, but the situation also was created by the person who's supposed to be there for him and watch out for him even if nobody else does. To be hurt in this way by your own mother is just sickening.
