Happy Lost Year

The show is back this year, and so are we.

The "premiere event" is just a few weeks away. It all begins again on:

Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m., EST

We'll be coming back at you with a better live blogging system, too, so that you can actually contribute in real time, similar to what we used during the election over on John Guerriero's blog.

Check out some of the action yourself.

No more flashbacks and flashforwards?

ABC released the first two episodes of this season to the critics, and the folks over at buddytv.com were included in that group. (Andrew and I weren't, but, hey, what can you do?).

They've been letting go a few hints everyday about what's coming up this season. One of the most interesting -- at least to writing geeks like me -- is the change in the show's story structure. Apparently, the focus on one character each episode might be over, and the forward-backward-here-there-everywhere structure of the show is gone.

Yes, that's right, the first two episodes are on a linear timeline.

Here's what buddytv.com has to say about it:

Trying to figure out how episodes will be structured based on these first two hours isn’t easy, especially since the structure will most likely change midway through the season. Either way, you should be prepared for a whole new kind of Lost that relies less on tricky flashbacks and flash forwards and more on the actual story of what’s happening in the characters’ present.

Also: Check out this story in New York Magazine, "Television Promises to Suck Significantly Less Than the Movies This January." Lost is apparently up against Fox's biggest show.

Ajira Airlines?

ajira.jpg

A new entry just went up on the LOST Blog that might interest you.

They found the subliminal message posted above in a video on the Ajira Airways Web site. There are a few semi-subliminal Ajira Airways logos in the latest Lost trailer for the season, including some sappy music from The Fray. (ABC runs the site, so don't try to book your flights.)

The folks at the LOST Blog think it's a hint for the coming season, but what do you think? Post your theories by leaving a comment below.

(UPDATE AND SPOILER: If you want to solve the whole mystery of Ajira Airways, LOST Blog just posted how to do it. I'm not going to try it, because apparently it reveals something about the coming season. Call me old fashioned, but I like to wait for the program.)

Lost Madness

In a strange, but cool, promotion, ABC has just unveiled a March-Madness-style bracket for fans to vote on their favorite episodes of the first for seasons of Lost.

You can check it out here.

The bracket is cool because it lets you watch clips and full episodes of Lost's greatest hits. Check it out.

What is your favorite episode of the show? Post your comments below.

You know you are ingrained in the culture when...

... you have a band dedicated to recapping episodes of your show.

The joke-band-performance-act-Hawaii-enthusiasts Previously on Lost claims they are the world's only TV-recap rock band, singing songs about what happens on episodes of Lost.

The reviews are good, including some from Wired.com and the New York Times. Most of the songs are strange and bouncy, as far as I can tell. The video below even includes a cheerful line about Charlie's death.

Strange.

Watch the video below and check out the band's MySpace page.

The band is even hosting a premiere party for the new season in Brooklyn if you want to make the road trip.

New photo from the upcoming season

Entertainment Weekly posted a new image from this season earlier this week.

In it, Juliet and Sawyer are being pushed around by seemingly-Vietnam-era soldiers on the island.

The question is this: How far did Ben move the island in time and space? Did he send it into the past? Or are these new bad guys just shopping at the Army surplus store?

Post your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

Premier night: Live blog

The new season begins on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. EST, and we are coming back with a new way to do things.

This year, we'll be using CoverItLive, a nice little live blogging contraption that we used at GoErie.com during election season.

What this means is that the live blog will be much more interactive -- you don't have to leave comments the old way during the live blog. Now you just have to type in a message in the live blog window and it goes up automatically. It's more chatroom than live blog.

Here are some examples:

Gov. Sarah Palin campaigns in Erie live blog

So, come back here next Wednesday for a new and improved "Get Lost" blog, with more interactive features. Also, don't forget to sign up for a reminder below.

Lost trivia game

Quick link for you this morning: the very cool Lost trivia game at EW.com put together at voxpop.tv.

Play it here.

Less than a week left

There's less than a week left until the big premiere. I've been doing my best to filter out the rumors and make sure what happens is a surprise (I've failed a few times. I'll leave what I know out of my predictions.)

Remember to sign up for a reminder about the live blog next Wednesday.

I only watched about 10 minutes of last season's finale, which aired Wednesday night in the special annotated version. It was possibly the most important ten minutes of the show though: just as the ship is about to explode, and Michael looks up to see Christian Shepard, Jack's dead dad, standing there. (You can read my first post about that madness here.)

Of course, there's a lot of other important stuff in those episodes, too. Did you watch last night? What struck you the most about last season's finale?

Post your comments below.

Lost caption contest

FilmFodder.com's Lost blog has a regular feature I'm pretty fond off.

It's called "LOST Caption" and it works a lot like you might expect: They post a photo and ask for your captions.

This week is a drawing made by a young, prescient John Locke featuring the smoke monster wailing on a stick figure.

So far, the captions are pretty lame, but I'm hoping you can do better.

ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT

This is a great time of year for big events, and I'm not afraid to group the season premiere of Lost in with a presidential inauguration, the Super Bowl, and Hollywood's awards' season.

The big Lost premiere is Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. EST. Yes, two days away.

Tuesday we'll have our predictions for the show, which are a bit too informed because of the articles I've been reading lately about the upcoming season. Before that, post a comment here with your theories, and I'll mention them in Tuesday's post.

And don't forget to sign up for an e-mail reminder for Wednesday's live blog.

Suggested reading for Jan. 19

The Associated Press offers a bite-sized preview of the season with their brief "A 'Lost' season of time shifting, Sawyer ahead." It's not quite a spoiler, I don't think.

Also, the New York Times on Sunday ran a great piece about the man who keeps track of the Lost bible -- that official master list of continuity and connections in a storyline with more twists and turns than the Ravine Flyer II. It's a good look at the practical problems writing and producing a show that's intentionally hard to understand. Read that article, "The Man Who Makes Sense of ‘Lost’"

SEASON PREMIERE TONIGHT!

Tonight is the night of the big premiere. Here's how it will go down:

8 p.m.: "Destiny Calls" airs. It's a clip show that will bring you up to speed if you can't remember the end of last season.

9 p.m.: The premiere -- called "Because you left / The lie" airs. Here's TV Guide.com's synopsis:

Season 5 opener: Jack and Ben try to reunite the Oceanic 6 for a return to the island (carrying Locke's body with them) to save the remaining survivors, while those survivors feel the effects of the island's move. Later, they come under attack by unknown forces. Meanwhile, Hurley and Sayid are on the run from police; and Kate gets some shocking advice from an old friend to ensure that "the lie" remains safe. Ana Lucia: Michelle Rodriguez. David Reyes: Cheech Marin. Carmen Reyes: Lillian Hurst.

Now, I usually open up with a prediction for what will happen during the episode. I won't do that this time, though. For one, I have no idea -- anything could happen, you know. Also, I've been inundated with the pre-premiere news from people who have seen the show, so I have read up on some of the minutiae that is to come (I can't predict how many times Ben is going to be punched in the face or anything, even.)

But, I will be live blogging starting at 8 p.m., opening up with a bit of a pre-show chat during the recap show if you want to join. I'll be putting up the shiny new live blog very soon.

See you tonight.

Namaste and all that good stuff.

DELAYED REACTION: "Because you left" and "The lie"

First, thanks to everyone who stopped in during live blog and chat last night. We will be doing the same thing next week, so come back and join us. Bring a friend, too.

This season's premiere was a kick in the head, huh?

A coworker this morning said that you would need a flow chart to follow the time line of the episodes. We were here, then we were there, then back again. It was enough to make your nose bleed, but who can be our constant?

SPOILER ALERT! Don't keep reading unless you've watched the premiere.

Coming up: "Jughead," some football game

This week's episode of Lost is titled "Jughead." Here's what TVGuide.com has listed as the show's synopsis:

Locke finds out the identity of the forces who have been attacking the survivors, and Desmond searches for a woman who could be the key to helping Faraday stop the island's erratic movements through time.

That woman Desmond is looking for, I suppose, would be Daniel Faraday's mother. Maybe she's Ms. Hawking, the mysterious white-haired woman that popped up in the church with Ben at the end of "The Lie."

There is little hint if the episode has anything to do with Archie's pal in the old comics.

ALSO: There's some Bruce Springsteen concert next Sunday. I hear some guys from Pittsburgh will be there. We'll be posting some videos this week about that event. Here's the first.
