Browns-Steelers: First quarter update

Browns 0, Steelers 0

Notes:

-- Interesting decision by Romeo Crennel to send out Phil Dawson for a 53-yard field goal attempt with the wind swirling. Dawson missed left. I guess the thinking is why not try to put points on the board first, but the miss gives the Steelers the ball at their 43. I'm sitting directly behind Browns GM Phil Savage, and he didn't seem to have a strong reaction after Crennel's decision, although he did turn and whisper something to Trip McCracken, the team's director of football administration.

-- Ben Roethlisberger had time on the interception he threw to Sean Jones at the Cleveland 9, but he threw the ball well behind Heath Miller on a crossing route. This isn't what the Steelers had in mind for Roethllisberger's playoff warm-up game.

-- Tyrone Carter left with a head injury after a hit that spun Donte Stallworth around. Carter was announced as questionable to return.

-- The Steelers have 19 rushing yards on six attempts after Mike Tomlin said the team wanted to re-establish the running game today. Gary Russell's eight-yard gain on their first drive was the longest run of the quarter.

-- The Steelers definitely are trying to get the ball to Hines Ward, who had three catches for 39 yards in the first quarter and surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

-- John Dudley
