Birder's delight

Tuesday's grand weather drew more than one person to Brown's Farm in Millcreek Township for a walk, run or bike ride.

The aerial show was an unexpected benefit.

Eastern bluebirds are rampant, flashing royally in the evening sun. They stay just a bush or twig ahead of farm visitors who step in to get a better look. The bluebird houses that line the looping paths ought to put out "no vacancy" signs.

Red-winged blackbirds cheered from the farm's interior sections, which for moment are almost indistinguishable from the foot trails. The mid-summer brambles and grasses remain knee-capped by months of snow cover.

A brown thrasher sang a gorgeous tune from treetops. Brilliantly colored cardinals stuck mostly near the treelines, where robins dug for dinner.
