Mark Trail and the case of the missing outdoors superhero

He wears flannel and brush pants, not a full-body next-generation suit of armor.

No mask or cowl for him; it would ruin his "Leave it to Beaver"-era coiff.

He hangs out with 50-year love interest Cherry Davis, buddy Johnny Malotte, and best pal Andy, not Robin.

Mark Trail's no comic-book superhero in the conventional sense. But he's the closest thing to Superman for hunters and anglers who peruse the comics pages of the Erie Times-News and other publications.

Saturday is Free Comic Book Day around the country. And while shops in northwestern Pennsylvania will be giving away free comics, they won't be of the Mark Trail variety. In fact, only a few Trail comics ever have been issued; if you want to party in Trail's Lost Forest National Forest, you have to do so in the daily newspaper.

In today's panels, the never-aging outdoors journalist is looking into missing pets. It's possible, maybe likely, that when he busts the case wide open, he'll also bust the villain in the chops. It's as close as he gets to the various forms of destruction that riddle superhero comics, and just as satisfying. You'll never get to duel an alien on another planet, but punch a pinched poacher? Maybe, if you're Mark Trail-lucky.
