Solitude

For every fish caught or game animal tagged, there's another seminal reason that most if not all of us who love the woods and waters feel so compelled to get out in them as often as possible.

Solitude.

Connectivity prevails today. Cellphones, Blackberries, iPods, text messages, mobile browsers -- it's not easy to disconnect in an age of Twitter, FaceBook and MySpace. Some revel in that constant connection, but even those people with BlueTooth gear seemingly melded to their heads need respite. Our mental health requires it, and some souls demand it.

One of the best instant getaways in northwestern Pennsylvania -- paddling the lagoons at Presque Isle State Park -- is brought to life in the story and video of Erie's Everglades. It's a great read, and a better destination. If you're new to the lagoons, or to paddling, find out how you can get involved.

Where do you go to escape? Reply to this post and share your real or dream destinations with NWPA Outdoors readers.
