Waterfowl migration reports week of Sept. 15

Waterfowl migration reports, provided weekly to the Erie Times-News by the Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff:

Western Pennsylvania

Pro-Staff member: David Rearick

Weather: Some rain last week, cold at night but warm and clear during the day

Water Conditions: Getting better, but we are still low

Feeding Conditions: The corn is coming down and the feeding conditions are optimal.

Species and Numbers: Resident Canada Geese populations are very good. They are finally starting to gang together and fields are holding good numbers of birds instead of just small groups.

Migrations: No migration at this time.

Season Stage: Resident Goose Season is open until the 25th of September

Hunting Report: Good for those that have been out scouting during the morning and evenings.

Gossip: Many hunters have already packed it in for goose season, and the others that continue to stay atop the birds are doing well.

Eastern Ohio

Pro-Staff member: Jason Mears

Location: Belmont, Ohio

Weather: Temperatures are still high with daytime highs in the 80’s. A front from the recent hurricane has brought needed rain and cooler temperatures.

Water Conditions: Rainfall for August was very minimal if any at all in some areas. All water levels are still low.

Feeding Conditions: Canada geese were spotted moving early in the morning and late evening due to high temperatures.

Species and Numbers: Resident Canada geese populations are average. Very few teal have been spotted making their migration south. Wood duck numbers are strong.

Migrations: No migration at this time.

Season Stage: The Resident Canada goose season opened Sept. 1. Teal season began Sept. 6.

Hunting Report: Very few teal are being spotted providing little hunting action. Hunters seem to be doing well on the resident goose population.

Gossip: Hunters are hoping that cooler temperatures this week will help push Teal south before the season ends this coming weekend.
