Waterfowl migration report for Sept. 24

Waterfowl migration reports, provided weekly to the Erie Times-News by the Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff:

New Castle, Pa.

Pro-Staff member: David Rearick

Weather: Cooling temperatures have increased the birds eagerness to fee don the newly cut corn instead of the grass along ponds.

Water conditions: Good, water is getting better in some areas and a recent influx of rain has helped to bring water levels back closer to normal.

Feeding conditions: Lots of cut corn and third-cut hay fields. The birds have been using the corn when they find it in good numbers, making bigger shoots and option.

Species and numbers: Good numbers of resident ducks and geese along with wood ducks in the area.

Migrations: No real migrations to speak of. Still local geese and ducks, the norm, for this area.

Season stage: Early season goose

Hunting report: Goose hunting has gotten hot over the last week. Lots of bigger groups of birds are being located and there is plenty of cover to hide in.

Gossip: Less and less pressure has made the hunting a little easier for those to find. Get out there and scout and it is game on.
