Bird on the refuge

Rich Eakin, a Crawford County resident and Sharon native who is an authority on birding, will lead a bird walk Oct. 18 at Erie National Wildlife Refuge.

The 2-hour walk on the refuge's Tsuga Trail is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. and is suitable for new and experienced birders.

This is a great chance for those who never have been to the refuge to discover what it has to offer, and an opportunity to experienced refuge visitors to view it with a new appreciation thanks to Eakin, a wildlife artist, birder and former biology professor who has traveled the world. Eakin also is a refuge volunteer and a member of the Friends of Erie National Wildlife Refuge support group.

Participants must pre-register by calling (814) 789-3585. The event is an offshoot of National Wildlife Refuge Week, which ends Oct. 12.
