Waterfowl migration report for week of Sept. 28

Waterfowl migration report for week of Sept. 28, provided weekly to the Erie Times-News by the Avery Outdoors Pro-Staff:

Pro-Staff member: David Rearick

Location: New Castle

Weather: Ups and downs across the board. Sunny and cloud free one day to rain and clouds the next. Normal September/October weather patterns

Water conditions: Good with building water in areas that were dry last month.

Feeding conditions: Lots of cut corn coming down along with the existent cut grain fields.

Species and numbers: Good numbers of resident birds, some teal still around but mostly wood ducks and local mallards for the duck opener Oct. 11.

Migrations: To the north, migrating geese and a few ducks have been reported. In my area, nothing moving except local birds.

Season stage: The first duck opener is Oct. 11.

Hunting report: With hunting season out for a few weeks, geese have been spotted back in their favorite areas now that the pressure has been lessened.

Gossip: Lots of guys have started gearing up for “other” types of hunting now that the September goose season is over. Those that intend to continue waterfowl hunting have begun to scout for local areas holding wood ducks and mallards.
