Perfect day, imperfect creek

Beauty is in the eye of the trout angler, and Sunday at Oil Creek State Park was beautiful.

Overcast. A bit cold. Leafless trees. Beautiful.

Except for Oil Creek itself.

It was clear enough, or at least not muddy, but last week's snow and rain was enough to drive the creek to unfishable levels. Discharge was more than 500 cubic feet per second as late as Sunday afternoon.

Discharge is down today, and the creek's a very fishable 2.6 feet at the gage near Route 8.

Two weeks ago Oil Creek was giving up trout to midges and small dries. Streamers and nymphs might work well today, giving way to dry flies again by Tuesday.
