Ice fishing for steelhead

Mike Bleech's column today is about targeting steelhead through the ice, ostensibly on Presque Isle Bay where steelhead catches often are welcome but not intended.

Some anglers leave the bay behind, and leave little doubt as to their goals.

A couple hardy souls perched over holes on the lake Saturday evening at the Trout Run nursery waters outflow, a neon pink sunset lighting the horizon. They had a good catch; at least a few steelhead on stringers flopped at their feet.

Over at Walnut Creek Access, the fishing was over the icy creek itself. Even as the sun sank, five anglers were testing their luck from the marina channel to the mouth, some with spin gear, others with tip-ups.

The lake from both access points is in full winter dress, solid ice as far as one can see.
