Are you still talking about the Erie Otters' 6-4 win against Kitchener on Saturday night?
Here's a few more thoughts to consider:
* All hail Sherry - For those Sherry Bassin critics out there, stop complaining. Everyone remembers his past failed trades (for example, Eric Regan and Brett MacLean to Oshawa in exchange for Bret Nasby and Adam Berti). But forwards Andrew Yogan and Sean Jones scored five of the team's six goals against the Rangers. Bassin gave up Anthony Peluso (who has never fulfilled his potential during his OHL career), goaltending prospect Brandon Maxwell (who apparently didn't want to play in Erie) and a few expendable draft picks for them.
Bassin won those trades - hands down.
* Speaking of trades - I'm certain Bassin's cell phone has been ringing incessantly while he's watching Otters goaltender Jaroslav Janus at the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ottawa, Ontario. But here's my gut feeling - Bassin won't trade any current regulars, especially since this group has begun to develop strong chemistry. He also has wanted some answers from doctors on injured defensemen Mitch Gaulton and Robyn Sertic, which hasn't happened yet. Bassin has an abundance of picks at his disposal. That could land him a solid veteran to fill that final overager spot before Friday's OHL trade deadline at noon.
* Cook fired up - Don't let the baby face deceive you. He's tough and not intimidated by anyone. He stood toe to toe with Kitchener's Micky Sartoretto in the third period. He's a big part of the Otters' future - both on defense and with a much-needed reputation overhaul.
* Back on the bandwagon - The crowd of 4,213 wasn't a surprise. The Otters are winning, so casual fans are back. But remember, it takes longer to win over fans and much less time to lose them.
* Off the Spott: Rangers coach/GM Steve Spott didn't attend Saturday's game. He was busy scouting other teams in the final week before the trade deadline. Expect him to deal a few veterans to continue the club's rebuilding effort. They have a few intriguing defensemen, namely Alex Dzielski and Dan Kelly. Maybe a contender takes a gamble on Robert Bortuzzo, who has missed nearly the entire season while rehabilitating his shoulder.
But don't expect any of them to end up with the Otters. Even though the Otters acquired Doug Clarkson from the Rangers last season, I'd be shocked if these two Midwest Division rivals completed a deal of greater significance.
One more thing ...
London made a big deal on Saturday, trading much-maligned forward Akim Aliu to Sudbury.
But most of the trade talk seems to be centered around the Knights potentially acquiring John Tavares from Oshawa after World Juniors end Monday.
That's a tough move for any GM to make. Tavares will be the league's best rental player for the rest of the season. Although he isn't 20 years, Tavares can play in the AHL next season because he will have completed four seasons in the OHL. Any GM will have to sacrifice plenty to get Tavares. So that GM's team better win the league title with him.
