Windsor has acquired center Scott Timmins, defenseman Ben Shutron and goaltender Josh Unice from Kitchener, the OHL announced today. The Rangers received goaltending prospect Brandon Maxwell, left wing Jacob Lalonde and three high-round draft picks.
Maxwell, the Otters' second-round pick in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection, began the season as an Otters' prospect playing for the United States National Team Development Program's Under-18 team. Sherry Bassin, Otters managing partner/general manager, doubted Maxwell would join the Otters after his two-year USNTDP commitment ended after this season.
So Bassin traded Maxwell's rights to Windsor for forward Andrew Yogan and a 2009 second-round pick on Nov. 7. According to Kitchener's Web site, Maxwell, a native of Cambridge, Ontario, a Kitchener suburb, will complete his U.S. commitment. A week after the Otters traded him, USA Hockey officials reportedly denied his request for a release so he could play for the Spitfires. His father, Brad Maxwell, is an assistant coach with nearby Guelph.
