I decided to pop into Dick's Sporting Goods last night -- thought I might treat myself to a new running shirt for the big marathon day (I already know I'm wearing tights -- no matter how hot -- due to the Chaffing Principle).
As usual, I was irritated with the prices ($35 to $50 ... for a shirt) and the selection (Note to Nike, Addidas and all the others: Women don't look good in -- and will not buy -- clothing in lime green, lemon yellow and any shade of orange).
....but, I was truly horrified in the dressing room. I'm a size 8, 120-some-pound woman and many of the "Large" shirts were skin tight.
Who the hell are they making these clothes for?
I found myself staring at the shirts in size XS (extra small) -- cause there were lots of them left on the racks -- and wondering if my 5-year-old could even fit in them. Let me just say this, if there is a grown woman who fits into those, she doesn't need exercise clothes, she needs an intervention.
I left there empty-handed and pissed off. I'm an athlete and I can't fit into these clothes. How does that make all those women who are just starting a fitness program feel? How discouraging that must be to them.
Here's hoping there are some retailers at the Cleveland Marathon expo who sell clothes made for real women - women with curves and boobs and, yes, body fat.
As for the rest of the manufacturers designing for all those 80-pound waif-athlete/aneorexics, well...they can kiss my big, fat ... .
