Running on empty

Ask anyone who knows me -- particularly those who work with me -- and they'll tell you that I eat all day long.

I subscribe to the theory of eating small meals every couple of hours -- a pre-run snack, breakfast, mid-morning snack, light lunch, mid-afternoon snack, dinner, evening snack.

Most of what I nosh on is healthy (not counting the chocolate I grab out of the boss's all-too-tempting candy bowl, day after day!), so in total...I probably eat less (calorie and fat-wise) than some people eat in their 3 square meals a day).

Recently, though, a runner told me that she never eats before her run because she heard it boosted the fat-burn of the exercise session. Always interested in upping the fat-burn of any time spent exercising, I decided to check it out.

Turns out that it's a popular exercise myth -- and skipping food before a workout can actually force your body to break down MUSCLE to feed itself.

So, fuel up before you go!

My post-run choice? Bananas -- they're easy to digest, quick to eat in the morning and they provide lots of potassium, too. On long run days, I eat a bagel or a bowl of Cheerios.
