Two ERC members with more energy that most men 1/2 their age will be running across the state on Saturday just for the fun of it. Yes...Mike Vieyra and Fred Beckwith have planned a little fun-run from Ohio to New York -- a mere 50 miles. Fun, right?

Well, they make it sound that way. In fact that talked it up so much that had I not just been humbled by 26.2 miles in Cleveland, I might have joined them.

And, I still might -- for part of their journey. They're welcoming anyone who wishes to join them for all or part of the run. See their whole route here. promise their pace will be very slow and they're walking every hill. They're heading out at 6 a.m. at Old Lake and Rudd Road at the Ohio line and they expect to take 10 hours to cover the 50 (.5) miles to Stateline road in Wattsburg.

Not up for a 50 miler? How about a 5K? The funnest race of the summer is coming up this Saturday, June 16 -- the Moonshine Shuffle 5K (also known as the Cheesecake Race because...you guessed it -- you get homemade cheesecake at the end -- along with hot dogs, baked beans, pasta salad and all the popcorn you can eat).

This is a true fun-run. There are no awards (though the race will be timed) and the highlight of the race is the party afterwards. They have great food, a fun DJ and dancing and lots of room to spread out. There are always lots of kids there (there's a kid's race beforehand), so they have a great time running around St. Francis Xavier's gymnasium while running (or walking...LOTS of walkers participate in this fun race!) have a chance to socialize with friends.

The race is in McKean. Don't panic -- it sounds farther than it is. It is actually only a few miles from the mall (on Route 99). It's a quick, easy drive and it's a really fun event for the whole family to do together.
