Fred Beckwith and Mike Vieyra finished their 50-mile trek across the state on Saturday. They were both at that evening's Moonshine Shuffle race -- though, no...they weren't racing. When I asked they how it was they said, "Uphill, all the way." Both looked tired, and yet, there was Fred running with his grandaughter in the kid's 1/2 mile race, and there was Mike helping in the kitchen with the post-race feast. Fred joked that after running with his grandaughter, Cassidy, he had a half-mile on Mike.
Dan & I decided early on to run the race easy. It is, after all, a "fun run." Dan laughed at me in disbelief. He knows me well enough to know that I don't "fun run" at a race. But, I was true to my word. We ran a nice easy 25 minute 5K and we talked the whole way (well, mostly, I talked...I talk a lot..surprised?).
Even though it's a "fun run" and there are no awards, they do time the race.
The kids race included 37 kids (including the Cass girls) ranging in age from 2 to 12. The first kid over the line was John-Scott Somora, 12, who finished in 3 minutes and 19 seconds. First girl was Danielle Munsee, 12, who finished in 3 minutes and 41 seconds.
There were nearly 300 people in the 5K with the winner -- Steven Battaglia of Clymer, N.Y. -- finishing first in 16:56. First woman was Jennifer Martin of Erie in 18:41.
